About John Roseboro
Signed by the Dodgers for a $5,000 bonus in 1952, John Roseboro spent five seasons working through Brooklyn's system before debuting in June 1957. When a car accident ended Roy Campanella's career that winter, the 24-year-old Roseboro inherited the job in the Dodgers' first Los Angeles season and held it for a decade. A four-time All-Star, he anchored the pitching staff for three world championship teams (1959, 1963, 1965) and won Gold Gloves in 1961 and 1966, leading National League catchers in putouts in multiple seasons. His three-run homer off Whitey Ford keyed Game One of the 1963 sweep of the Yankees. So quiet that teammates nicknamed him "Gabby," Roseboro is remembered above all for August 22, 1965, when Giants ace Juan Marichal clubbed him with a bat during a bench-clearing brawl at Candlestick Park, one of baseball's most notorious incidents. He finished his 14-year career with Minnesota and Washington, retiring with 104 home runs and 1,206 hits. Card #88 in the 1960 Topps set catches him three seasons into his unlikely rise from third-string catcher to Gold Glove-caliber starter.
