1960 Topps #105 Larry Sherry

About Larry Sherry
Larry Sherry broke in with his hometown Dodgers in 1958, their first season on the West Coast. Born into a Jewish family and afflicted with clubfeet as an infant, he wore corrective shoes through childhood before starring at Fairfax High in Los Angeles. His 1960 Topps #105 issue, a recognized rookie card, catches him a year removed from stardom: in 1959 the right-hander went 7-2 with a 2.19 ERA and was named Most Valuable Player of the World Series, closing out all four Dodgers wins over the Chicago White Sox with a 0.71 ERA over 12 2/3 innings and earning the Babe Ruth Award. He posted a career-high 14 wins in 1960, and that May 7 he and catcher-brother Norm Sherry became batterymates for the first time in the majors — the first Jewish brother battery in big-league history — with Larry earning the win when Norm's walk-off homer beat the Phillies in 11 innings. Traded to Detroit in 1964, he notched a career-best 20 saves in 1966 and finished 1958-68 with a 53-44 record, 82 saves and a 3.67 ERA before coaching for the Pirates and Angels.
