About Billy Gardner
Nicknamed "Shotgun" for his rifle throwing arm, Billy Gardner was a scrappy, sure-handed second baseman who broke in with the 1954 World Series champion New York Giants before settling in as Baltimore's everyday second baseman from 1956 to 1959. His 1960 Topps card, #106, catches him in Orioles garb from that run. His best season came in 1957, when he led the American League in doubles (36) and at-bats (644), played all 154 games, and topped AL second basemen in fielding percentage (.987) during a 55-game errorless streak. Traded to Washington in 1960, Gardner later teamed with the Yankees to win a second championship ring in 1961 before finishing his playing career with the Twins and Red Sox. He spent the next two decades coaching and managing, most notably piloting the Minnesota Twins from 1981 to 1985 as Kent Hrbek, Kirby Puckett, and Frank Viola broke in, and later taking over the 1987 Kansas City Royals after Dick Howser's illness forced his retirement.
