About Milt Pappas
Milt Pappas, born in Detroit to Greek immigrant parents who anglicized the family name, signed with the Orioles out of Cooley High School in 1957 for $4,000 on the recommendation of former Tigers ace Hal Newhouser. He debuted that August at 18, retiring future Hall of Famers Enos Slaughter and Yogi Berra in his first inning of work. By the 1960 season shown on this card, Pappas anchored Baltimore's young "Kiddie Korps" rotation, the first of eleven straight double-digit-win seasons. He made three All-Star teams as an Oriole — both 1962 games, then the 1965 starter — before Baltimore, in December 1965, dealt him to Cincinnati in one of baseball's most notorious trades: Pappas for superstar Frank Robinson. He went on to pitch for the Reds, Braves and Cubs, no-hitting San Diego on September 2, 1972 at Wrigley Field, one strike from a perfect game before a disputed walk call. He finished 209–164, the first 200-game winner never to reach 20 wins in any single season, and carried the nickname "Gimpy" from a knee surgery at 17. Baltimore inducted him into its Orioles Hall of Fame in 1985.
