About Hal Brown
Hal Brown's 1960 Topps card, #89, catches him with the Baltimore Orioles during the finest season of his 14-year career: a 12-5 record and career-low 3.06 ERA, plus a league-leading 1.25 walks per nine innings. A right-hander from a Greensboro, North Carolina mill town, Brown was nicknamed \"Skinny\" as an ironically chubby baby among eight children, and the name stuck for life. He served in the Army Air Forces in World War II before signing with the Red Sox in 1946, then debuted with the Chicago White Sox in 1951. Traded to Boston in 1953 and on to the Orioles in July 1955, Brown mastered a controlled knuckleball that made him, alongside Hoyt Wilhelm, the veteran mentor to the Orioles' young "Baby Birds" rotation during the club's 1960-61 pennant chases against the Yankees. He closed his career with brief stints for New York and the Houston Colt .45s, retiring in 1964 with an 85-92 record and 710 strikeouts, and was inducted into the Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame in 1991.
