About Paul Richards
Paul Rapier Richards signed with Brooklyn at seventeen in 1926 and played parts of eight seasons as a defensive-minded catcher for the Dodgers, Giants, Athletics, and Tigers, driving in three runs on a bases-loaded double in Detroit's Game 7 win over the Cubs in the 1945 World Series. Already an accomplished manager after leading Atlanta to a 1938 Southern Association pennant, Richards took over the moribund Chicago White Sox in 1951 and sparked the aggressive base-running that gave the club its enduring "Go-Go Sox" nickname. In 1955 he arrived in Baltimore as both field manager and general manager — the first since John McGraw to hold both jobs — rebuilding the Orioles from the farm system up and headlining the effort with a 17-player trade with the Yankees. A sportswriter dubbed him "The Wizard of Waxahachie" for his Texas hometown and inventive mind: Richards tracked on-base percentage before it had a name and was the first manager to enforce pitch counts on young arms. By 1960 his "Baby Birds" — anchored by 23-year-old holdover Brooks Robinson — gave Baltimore its first winning season since the 1954 move from St. Louis, the backdrop for card #224 in Topps' manager subset.
