About Bill Rigney
Bill Rigney broke in with the New York Giants in 1946 as a 28-year-old rookie after wartime military service, then spent eight seasons at second, third and short, making the 1948 All-Star team and appearing in the 1951 World Series. After steering Triple-A Minneapolis to the 1955 pennant, he succeeded his mentor Leo Durocher as Giants manager in 1956, piloting New York's final Polo Grounds club before becoming San Francisco's first-ever skipper in 1958. Rigney pushed the young Giants — Orlando Cepeda, Jim Davenport, Willie Mays — into pennant races in 1958 and 1959, but a June 1960 slide got him fired despite a 33-25 start; this card's back still lists him with "New York Giants," an uncorrected error left over from the franchise's move west. Rigney went on to manage the expansion Angels for nine seasons and the 1970 AL West champion Twins, retiring with 1,239 career wins over 18 years before a final turn at the Giants' helm in 1976.
