1960 Topps #23 Eddie Fisher

About Eddie Fisher
Card #23 in the 1960 Topps set catches Eddie Fisher fresh off a three-game September call-up with the San Francisco Giants, and it stands as his recognized rookie card. Signed out of the University of Oklahoma, where he pitched and played basketball, Fisher debuted for the Giants on June 22, 1959, beating Pittsburgh in his first big-league start. He shuttled between San Francisco and the Pacific Coast League through 1961 before a November trade sent him to the Chicago White Sox for Billy Pierce and Don Larsen. In Chicago he was paired in the bullpen with fellow knuckleballer Hoyt Wilhelm, who helped him refine the pitch, and Fisher developed into one of the American League's top firemen. His best season came in 1965: a 15-7 record, 2.40 ERA, and an All-Star selection while leading the league with 82 appearances. Traded to Baltimore in 1966, he won a World Series ring with the Orioles that fall. Fisher pitched 15 major-league seasons, retiring in 1973 as the AL's all-time leader in relief appearances, with an 85-70 record, 82 saves, and a 3.41 ERA.
