About Jim Davenport

James Houston Davenport, nicknamed "Peanut" (or "Peanuts") by his grandfather as a child, spent his entire 13-year playing career with the San Francisco Giants after signing out of the University of Southern Mississippi, where he had starred as a football quarterback and hit .439 for the baseball team in 1954. The right-handed third baseman debuted April 15, 1958, taking the Giants' first at-bat in their new West Coast home, and his 1960 Topps card, #154, catches him mid-run leading National League third basemen in fielding percentage three straight years, 1959 through 1961. His finest season came in 1962: a .297 average, 14 homers, his only All-Star selection, a Gold Glove, and a bases-loaded walk in the pennant-clinching playoff win over the Dodgers, followed by a start in all seven games of that year's World Series against the Yankees. He later set a Giants record with 97 consecutive errorless games at third base, 1966-1968. Davenport finished with a .258 average, 77 homers and 456 RBIs over 1,501 games, then remained with the organization as a coach, scout and the club's 1985 manager, 51 years with the Giants in all.
