About Johnny Antonelli
John August Antonelli signed with the Boston Braves in 1948 for a $52,000 bonus, the largest in baseball history, a "bonus baby" rule that sent the 18-year-old Rochester, New York native straight to the majors without a single minor-league inning. After two years pitching sparingly for Boston and two more lost to Army service during the Korean War, the left-hander was traded to the Giants before the 1954 season, a deal that cost New York popular outfielder Bobby Thomson. Antonelli delivered immediately: 21 wins, a league-best 2.30 ERA, and the pennant, then outdueled Hall of Famer Early Wynn in Game 2 of the Giants' World Series sweep of Cleveland. He won 20 games in 1956 and made four straight All-Star teams through 1959, following the franchise to San Francisco in 1958. His 1960 Topps cards, the base card at #80 and a Sport Magazine All-Star selection at #572 that closes the set's short-printed high-number run, arrived as he was shifted to the bullpen that season. He pitched one last year in 1961 before retiring rather than join the expansion Mets, returning home to Rochester to run his Firestone tire business.
