The players on this card
San Francisco's third season in its new city opened at a new address: Candlestick Park, the first ballpark built entirely of reinforced concrete, where Richard Nixon threw out the first pitch on April 12 and called it the finest park in the country. The Giants hovered near the front of the pennant race into June, a single game out of first, before ownership fired manager Bill Rigney and turned the club over to 66-year-old scout Tom Sheehan. San Francisco finished 79-75, fifth in the National League, 16 games behind the champion Pirates. Willie Mays carried the lineup — .319, 29 home runs, 103 RBI, a Gold Glove — with Orlando Cepeda driving in 96 more, while reigning Rookie of the Year Willie McCovey slumped badly enough to be optioned to Tacoma in July. That same month produced the season's signature moment: rookie Juan Marichal's major-league debut, a one-hit, 12-strikeout shutout of the Phillies at Candlestick on July 19.
