About Gail Harris
Gail Harris signed with the New York Giants at 18 in 1950 and spent five and a half minor league seasons before debuting on June 3, 1955, taking over first base when Whitey Lockman shifted to left field. He lost the job to Bill White in 1956, but with White off in the Army, Harris got a second chance in 1957 and made franchise history: on September 21 at Forbes Field, he hit the last home run by a New York Giant. Traded to Detroit that January with Ozzie Virgil for Jim Finigan, Harris broke out in 1958, taking over first base from Ray Boone in June and posting career highs of 20 home runs, 82 RBIs and a .278 average in a career-best 134 games. He couldn't repeat it, slumping to .149 in May 1959 and finishing at .221, and once Norm Cash claimed the job in 1960, Harris was dealt to the Dodgers for Sandy Amoros just eight games into the season. He closed a six-year major league career with a .240 average, 51 home runs and 189 RBIs. This 1960 Topps card, #152, was his last as a Tiger and his final Topps issue.
