The 1960 Tigers opened the season with two landmark trades. On April 12, Detroit acquired first baseman Norm Cash from Cleveland for utility infielder Steve Demeter — a deal that looked lopsided within a year, once Cash won the 1961 AL batting crown. Five days later, Detroit sent reigning batting champion Harvey Kuenn to the Indians, even up, for reigning home run champion Rocky Colavito. Al Kaline anchored center field at .278, Colavito supplied 35 homers and 87 RBI, and Frank Lary and Jim Bunning carried the rotation from Briggs Stadium's mound. None of it steadied the club: Jimmy Dykes managed until an August 3 trade sent him to Cleveland for Joe Gordon, the only skipper-for-skipper swap in major league history, with Billy Hitchcock filling in between. Detroit finished 71–83, sixth in the American League, 26 games behind the pennant-winning Yankees.
