About Bob Gibson
Bob Gibson signed with the Cardinals in 1957 after a standout basketball career at Creighton University and a brief run touring with the Harlem Globetrotters. He debuted in 1959, became a full-time starter in 1961, and spent all 17 of his seasons in a Cardinals uniform, emerging as the most feared right-hander of his era. Gibson finished 251-174 with a 2.91 ERA and 3,117 strikeouts, then second only to Walter Johnson in career strikeouts. He anchored World Series champions in 1964 and 1967, winning Series MVP honors both times, and threw a no-hitter in August 1971. His signature season came in 1968, the "Year of the Pitcher," when he posted a 1.12 ERA with 13 shutouts and struck out a World Series-record 17 batters in Game One, earning NL MVP honors and the first of two Cy Young Awards. A nine-time All-Star and nine-time Gold Glove winner, he picked up the nickname "Hoot," borrowed from silent-film cowboy star Hoot Gibson. This 1960 Topps #73 is his second-year card, issued before he claimed a permanent rotation spot and years before he became the sport's most punishing arm. He entered the Hall of Fame in 1981, his first year of eligibility.
