About Jim Donohue
A St. Louis native out of Christian Brothers College High School, Jim Donohue signed with his hometown Cardinals in 1956 and rose through their system as a top pitching prospect, going 7-0 with a 1.48 ERA for Class A York in 1958 and pitching alongside Bob Gibson at Triple-A Omaha. His "buggy whip" delivery, compared to Reds all-star Ewell Blackwell's, earned him the nickname "The Whip." Donohue nearly made St. Louis's 1960 Opening Day roster -- GM Bing Devine called him camp's "sleeper" -- which is why his 1960 Topps #124 card, part of the Sport Magazine Rookie Star subset, shows him as a Cardinal. He never actually pitched for St. Louis: a June 1960 trade sent him to the Dodgers, and Detroit's Rule 5 pick that winter got him to the majors in 1961. Donohue went 6-8 with seven saves over parts of two seasons with the Tigers, Angels and Twins before finishing his playing days in the minors in 1964.
