About Ron Kline

Ron Kline pitched 17 big-league seasons (1952, 1955-1970) across nine teams, winning 114 games with 108 saves and a 3.75 ERA. Signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates out of a 1950 Forbes Field tryout camp by Pie Traynor, he starred in Class D ball before a rocky 1952 debut and two years of Army service in the Korean War. Kline anchored Pittsburgh's rotation through the late 1950s, twice leading the National League in losses, before the Pirates dealt him to the St. Louis Cardinals on December 29, 1959, for Gino Cimoli and Tom Cheney — the trade behind this 1960 Topps card. His lone Cardinals season was rough, a 4-9 mark as St. Louis finished third while the Pirates he'd left went on to win the World Series. Reinvented as a reliever, Kline later led the American League in saves with the 1965 Washington Senators and posted a career-best 1.68 ERA back with Pittsburgh in 1968. He retired to Callery, Pennsylvania, where he ran a tavern and served as the borough's mayor.
