About Bob Nieman
Cincinnati native Bob Nieman signed with his hometown Reds in 1948 and reached the St. Louis Browns' organization in 1951, debuting that September. His first game was historic: on September 14, 1951, he homered in his first two big-league at-bats at Fenway Park, a feat unmatched since 1889 and unrepeated since. The right-handed-hitting outfielder went on to a 12-year career with seven teams, batting .295 with a 132 OPS+ despite never making an All-Star team. His finest season came with the 1956 Orioles, when he hit .320 and finished seventh in AL MVP voting. Baltimore traded him to St. Louis in December 1959, and this card catches him in his Cardinals uniform after he won the left-field job in 1960, before a May 1961 trade to Cleveland cut his stay short. He closed his career as a pinch hitter for the pennant-winning 1962 Giants, drawing an intentional walk that loaded the bases in his only World Series at-bat, ahead of Chuck Hiller's series-tying grand slam. He later spent nearly two decades as a respected scout.
