About Carl Yastrzemski

Carl Yastrzemski opened his professional career in 1959 with Class B Raleigh, batting .377 to win Carolina League MVP and Rookie of the Year honors, then spent the entire 1960 season with the American Association's Minneapolis Millers — the year pictured on this Sport Magazine Rookie Star card, where Topps optimistically listed him at second base, a position he never played in the majors. He debuted with Boston in 1961, inheriting Ted Williams' left-field job, and played his entire 23-year career with the Red Sox. In 1967 he carried Boston's "Impossible Dream" pennant run, winning the American League Triple Crown (.326, 44 HR, 121 RBI) and MVP honors — the last Triple Crown until Miguel Cabrera in 2012. An 18-time All-Star and seven-time Gold Glove winner, he finished with 3,419 hits and 452 home runs, the first American Leaguer to reach both 3,000 hits and 400 homers. Fans and writers, stumped by his Polish surname, shortened it to "Yaz." He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1989 with 94.6% of the vote.
