About Mike Fornieles
José Miguel Fornieles y Torres, a right-hander from Havana, Cuba, signed with the Washington Senators in 1950 and reached the majors on September 2, 1952, throwing a one-hitter against the Philadelphia Athletics in his debut at age 20. Traded to the Chicago White Sox that winter, he later moved to the Baltimore Orioles in 1956 and then to the Boston Red Sox in June 1957, where he spent seven seasons and became the club's ace reliever. Shifted to the bullpen full-time in 1959, Fornieles set a major-league record with 70 relief appearances in 1960, led the American League with 48 games finished, and tied for the league lead in saves while winning the first-ever Sporting News AL Fireman of the Year Award — the form that lands him on this 1960 Topps card in a Red Sox uniform. He made his only All-Star team in 1961, then closed out his career with the Twins in 1963, retiring with 55 saves and a 63-64 record. He died in St. Petersburg, Florida, in 1998.
