The players on this card
The 1960 Red Sox finished a distant seventh in the American League at 65-89, 32 games behind the pennant-winning New York Yankees. Boston cycled through three managers during the year — Billy Jurges, Del Baker, and Pinky Higgins — and after the home finale the club fired second-year general manager Bucky Harris, signing Higgins to a three-year contract as field manager and director of player personnel. Infielder Pete Runnels supplied the lone bright spot, hitting .320 to capture the American League batting championship. The season's lasting image belongs to 42-year-old Ted Williams: in his final Fenway Park at-bat on September 28, he drove career home run No. 521, then sat out Boston's closing road trip to Yankee Stadium, closing his career at a .316 average without facing another pitch.
