About Wynn Hawkins

Wynn Firth Hawkins was born February 20, 1936, in East Palestine, Ohio. A two-sport standout, he starred in basketball at Baldwin-Wallace College, becoming the school's all-time leading scorer at the time with 1,175 points in three seasons, while playing baseball for Cleveland's farm system after signing for a $4,000 bonus in 1955. The right-hander broke into the Indians' rotation in 1960; his card, #536, falls in the short-printed high-number run (#507-572) that closes the set and is recognized as his rookie card. Hawkins is best remembered for surrendering Ted Williams's 500th career home run on June 17, 1960. He worked as Cleveland's fourth starter in 1961, going 7-9 with a 4.06 ERA, before military service and a freak arm injury -- reportedly from throwing a snowball -- shortened his final season. He finished 12-13 with a 4.17 ERA over three big-league years, then scouted and served as the Indians' traveling secretary.
