1960 Topps #535 Whitey Lockman

About Whitey Lockman
Whitey Lockman broke in with the New York Giants in July 1945 at age 18, homering in his first major-league at-bat and driving in four runs that same afternoon at the Polo Grounds. The Lowell, North Carolina native spent the bulk of his career with the Giants, from that wartime debut through the club's 1958 move to San Francisco, making the National League All-Star team in 1952. He played a pivotal role in one of baseball's most famous moments: his one-out double off Don Newcombe on October 3, 1951, set the stage for Bobby Thomson's pennant-winning "Shot Heard 'Round the World," with Lockman himself scoring the tying run just ahead of Thomson. He won a World Series ring in 1954 when the Giants swept Cleveland. Traded to St. Louis in 1956, Lockman closed out his fifteen-year playing career with Baltimore and, in 1959-60, Cincinnati -- the Reds cap he wears on card #535, a short-printed high number in the 1960 Topps set. He later managed the Chicago Cubs (1972-74). Giants teammates nicknamed him "Whitey" for his light-blond hair, replacing the childhood nickname "Pickle" he'd carried since boyhood in Gaston County.
