1960 Topps #534 Ken MacKenzie

About Ken MacKenzie
Ken MacKenzie's 1960 Topps card #534 catches him early in a slow, patient rise — the Yale-educated Canadian lefty didn't debut until age 26, and the card falls in the short-printed high-number series (#507–572), doubling as his rookie card. Born in Gore Bay, Ontario, MacKenzie signed with the Braves in 1956, spent three seasons in the farm system, and debuted for Milwaukee on May 2, 1960. He pitched for the Braves through 1961 before the expansion Mets purchased his contract. As an original Met, MacKenzie went 5-4 in 1962, the only pitcher on that 120-loss team with a winning record — manager Casey Stengel called him "a splendid young fella with a great education from Yale University" whose signing made him "the lowest paid member of the class of Yale '56." He remained the Mets' lone over-.500 pitcher in 1963, then closed his career with the Cardinals, Giants, and Astros through 1965, finishing 8-10 with 142 strikeouts. He later coached baseball at Yale for a decade.
