1960 Topps #189 Don McMahon

About Don McMahon
Don McMahon broke in with the Milwaukee Braves on June 30, 1957, during their pennant drive, and pitched all three of his relief appearances in that fall's World Series without allowing a run as Milwaukee beat the Yankees. In 1958 he made the NL All-Star team, his only selection, and helped the Braves return to the Series. Signed by Boston Braves scout John "Honey" Russell in 1950, McMahon spent two years in the Army before reaching the majors at 27, then worked almost exclusively in relief for 18 seasons and seven clubs. This 1960 Topps card catches him in his fourth season with Milwaukee, a rough year on the mound (3-6, 5.94 ERA) sandwiched between two of his better ones. He went on to Houston, Cleveland, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, and San Francisco, adding a second championship ring with the 1968 Tigers. He retired in 1974 with 152 saves, 1,003 strikeouts, and 874 games pitched — at the time trailing only Hoyt Wilhelm, Lindy McDaniel, and Cy Young.
