About Bob Hartman
Bob Hartman's 1960 Topps card, #129, tabs him a Sport Magazine Rookie Star with the Milwaukee Braves. The Kenosha, Wisconsin native turned down a University of Wisconsin scholarship to sign with his home-state Braves in 1955, then survived a diabetes diagnosis at 19 that cost him 50 pounds and nearly his career. He rebuilt into a 20-game winner for the Double-A Atlanta Crackers in 1958, the club's first pitcher to reach 20 wins and the Southern Association's youngest, earning unanimous all-star honors. He debuted with Milwaukee in 1959 and later helped Louisville win the Junior World Series, but arm trouble and a crowded rotation kept him shuttling to the minors. Traded to Cleveland for Ken Aspromonte in June 1962, Hartman made a standout first start at Detroit, working ten innings and allowing three hits before leaving tied 1-1 in a game Cleveland won in 12. He finished 0-1, 5.21 in 11 career games, then returned to Kenosha as a youth mentor, athletic director and elected official, and died in 2010 at age 72.
