About Wes Covington
John Wesley Covington broke in with the Milwaukee Braves in 1956, a power-hitting outfielder who became a fixture on their pennant-winning clubs. Signed out of North Carolina by scout Dewey Griggs, he first roomed with Hank Aaron in the Eau Claire, Wisconsin, minor-league system in 1952. Recalled from Wichita in June 1957, Covington hit .284 with 21 home runs over the second half and made two spectacular catches in left field during that fall's World Series, helping the Braves beat the Yankees in seven games. He set career highs in 1958 - .330, 24 homers, 74 RBIs in just 90 games - as Milwaukee returned to the Series, falling to New York in the rematch. Left-handed at the plate, right-handed in the field, he played for Milwaukee through 1961 before moving on to the White Sox, Athletics, Phillies, Cubs, and Dodgers, finishing an 11-year career with 131 home runs and a .279 average. He died in Edmonton, Alberta, in 2011.
