1960 Topps #19 Felix Mantilla

About Felix Mantilla
Félix Mantilla — nicknamed "El Gato" ("the Cat") for his defensive agility — signed with the Boston Braves for a $400 bonus in 1952 after playing winter ball for Caguas in his native Puerto Rico. In 1953 he helped integrate the Class A Jacksonville Braves alongside roommate Hank Aaron, enduring rough treatment in the Deep South. Mantilla reached Milwaukee in 1956 and, over six seasons, played every position but pitcher and catcher, winning a World Series ring in the Braves' 1957 championship over the Yankees. His 1960 Topps card, #19, catches him mid-career as a Braves utility man splitting time at second base and shortstop. He's also remembered for the errant relay throw that let Gil Hodges score the pennant-winning run in the Dodgers' 1959 playoff sweep of Milwaukee. Dealt away in the 1961 expansion draft, Mantilla blossomed with the Red Sox, blasting 30 homers in 1964 to earn Comeback Player of the Year honors and making his only All-Star team in 1965. Over 11 seasons with four clubs he hit .261 with 89 home runs, before his death in Milwaukee in January 2025 at age 90.
