About Al Spangler

Al Spangler debuted as a September call-up with the Milwaukee Braves in 1959, then spent the 1960 and 1961 seasons as a reserve outfielder in Milwaukee — the years captured on his 1960 Topps Sport Magazine Rookie Star card (#143), part of the 32-card subset running #117-148 and recognized as his rookie card. A Philadelphia native and Duke University All-American, the left-handed hitter was signed by Braves scout Gil English in 1954 and drew early comparisons to Hall of Famer Richie Ashburn for his speed and contact hitting. Exposed in the 1961 expansion draft, he was a premium pick of the Houston Colt .45s and started their inaugural game, driving in the franchise's first run against the Cubs on April 10, 1962; he led Houston's regulars with a .281 average in 1963. He later played for the Angels and closed his 13-year career with the Cubs in 1971, finishing with a .262 average, 21 home runs, and 175 RBIs in 912 games, then coached in the Cubs' organization through 1974.
