About Bill Short
Bill Short's 1960 Topps card (#142) catches a Yankees prospect at peak hype, part of the Sport Magazine Rookie Star subset (#117-148) and a recognized rookie card. Born in Kingston, New York, and signed out of Newburgh Free Academy by legendary Yankees scout Paul Krichell, the left-hander — nicknamed "Diamond Bill" in his hometown high school yearbook — climbed through five minor-league rungs before a breakout 1959 at Triple-A Richmond, going 17-6, 2.48 ERA, to win International League MVP honors and draw press comparisons to Whitey Ford. Army service delayed his call-up into 1960, but he beat Baltimore in his April 23 debut, and manager Casey Stengel said he "looks and acts like a big-leaguer already." An elbow injury limited him to a 3-5 rookie season, and Short never stuck with the Yankees again, bouncing through Baltimore, Boston, Pittsburgh, the Mets, and Cincinnati into 1969. His signature moment: a six-hit shutout of the Twins on July 1, 1966, the lone complete-game whitewash of his career. He later coached for the Pirates and joined the International League Hall of Fame in 2009.
