About Jim Coates
James Alton Coates signed with the Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1952 and spent seven years in the minors, including a broken elbow in 1958, before sticking in the Bronx for good in 1959. The side-arming right-hander worked as a spot starter and reliever for New York through 1962, going 37-15 and earning the nickname "The Mummy" for his deadpan, funereal look on the mound. His best year came in 1960: a 13-3 record, his only All-Star selection, and a trip to the World Series, where he surrendered two of the four home runs Pittsburgh hit in a seven-game Yankees loss. He made amends in 1961, firing four scoreless relief innings to save Game 4 after an injured Whitey Ford departed, then won a second ring in 1962. Traded to Washington in 1963, Coates closed out his career with Cincinnati and the Angels, finishing in 1967 with a 43-22 record and 4.00 ERA over nine seasons. His 1960 Topps card, #51, catches him mid-Yankees run, a year before he helped close out back-to-back titles.
