About Cletis Boyer
Cletis Leroy Boyer, known to fans simply as Clete, broke into the majors as an 18-year-old bonus-baby infielder with the Kansas City Athletics in 1955 — one of three ballplaying Boyer brothers, alongside Cardinals pitcher Cloyd and NL MVP third baseman Ken. The Athletics dealt him to the Yankees in 1957 as part of a prearranged trade, and after three seasons polishing his game in the minors, he won New York's starting third-base job in 1960, the season shown on his Topps card #109, as the Yankees won the pennant. Boyer's glove, not his bat, defined his career: he anchored the Yankee infield through five straight pennants and two championships, 1961 and 1962, homering off Billy O'Dell in the latter Series opener. Traded to Atlanta after 1966, he won his only Gold Glove in 1969 and later starred four seasons in Japan with the Taiyō Whales. Over 16 big-league seasons he hit .242 with 162 home runs and 654 RBI, then coached for the Athletics and Yankees before his death in 2007.
