About Cal McLish
Cal McLish carried one of baseball's most memorable names -- Calvin Coolidge Julius Caesar Tuskahoma McLish, courtesy of a father who, after naming none of his first six children, made the most of his turn. Signed by Brooklyn Dodgers scout Tom Greenwade out of Oklahoma City's Central High School in 1944, McLish debuted with Brooklyn that year with no minor-league experience, then missed nearly two seasons in the Army in Europe. He found his footing with Cleveland in 1956 after stops with Pittsburgh and the Cubs, blossoming into a full-time starter in 1958 (16-8, 2.99 ERA). In 1959 he went 19-8, made his only All-Star team, and earned the save in that year's All-Star Game, part of a since-broken major-league record of 16 consecutive road wins spanning 1958-59. Traded to Cincinnati that winter, McLish -- known to teammates as Bus or Buster -- appears on card 110 with the Reds, his only season there before the White Sox and Phillies. He finished 92-92 over 15 seasons, then coached pitchers for the Phillies, Expos and Brewers into the 1980s.
