1960 Topps #235 Gus Bell

About Gus Bell
David Russell "Gus" Bell entered pro ball in the Pittsburgh Pirates' system in 1947 and reached the majors on May 30, 1950. He got his own nickname as a Louisville, Kentucky kid, borrowed from an admired veteran catcher, Gus Mancuso. After hitting for the cycle against the Phillies on June 4, 1951, Bell was traded to Cincinnati in October 1952 and became one of the era's steadiest outfielders, driving in 100-plus runs four times and hitting .292 or better in six seasons, topped by a .300/30-homer/105-RBI 1953 and a .308/27-homer/104-RBI 1955. A four-time All-Star (1953, 1954, 1956, 1957), he homered in three straight at-bats on May 29, 1956, and helped the Reds capture their first pennant in 21 years in 1961 before closing his career with the Mets and Braves. Later inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame, Bell became patriarch of a rare three-generation big-league family — son Buddy and grandson David both wore his uniform #25 in tribute.
