About Eddie Kasko
Eddie Kasko broke into pro ball in 1949 out of Linden, New Jersey, and after six minor-league seasons and an Army stint during the Korean War era, reached the majors in 1957 with the St. Louis Cardinals. Cincinnati acquired the slick-fielding shortstop-third baseman for 1959, and this #61 card catches him in a Reds uniform on the eve of the club's 1961 pennant run. Kasko made the All-Star team that year, then started all five World Series games at shortstop against the Yankees, leading Cincinnati with seven hits and batting .318. He led National League third basemen in fielding percentage in 1960 and NL shortstops in that category in 1964, closing out a ten-year playing career (1957-66, also with Houston and Boston) at a .264 average. Kasko later managed the Red Sox from 1970 through 1973, posting four straight winning seasons while breaking in Carlton Fisk and Dwight Evans, then spent two decades as Boston's scouting director, drafting Roger Clemens and Jeff Bagwell among others. The Red Sox inducted him into their team Hall of Fame in 2010.
