About Ted Wieand
Born Franklin Delano Roosevelt "Ted" Wieand in Walnutport, Pennsylvania, one month after FDR's 1933 inauguration, the hard-throwing righty was a heavily scouted Lehigh Valley amateur. He went 9-1 with four one-hitters as a Slatington High School senior and 28-3 in American Legion ball, known in those days as the "Whiff Kid" for his strikeout numbers, before the Cardinals signed him for a bonus topping $25,000 in 1952. Cincinnati acquired him in a December 1957 trade that sent Curt Flood to St. Louis. Wieand debuted for the Redlegs on September 27, 1958, striking out Hall of Famer Warren Spahn for his first big-league whiff. His 1960 Topps card, #146 in the Sport Magazine Rookie Star subset, arrived the same spring his career ended: after he surrendered a grand slam to Phillies catcher Jimmie Coker on April 24, general manager Gabe Paul had him reassigned immediately. He finished 0-1 with a 9.95 ERA in six relief appearances and pitched in the minors through 1962.
