About Vada Pinson

Vada Edward Pinson Jr. signed with the Cincinnati Redlegs for a $4,000 bonus just before his eighteenth birthday, out of Oakland's McClymonds High School, where coach George Powles also developed future Reds teammate Frank Robinson and star centerfielder Curt Flood. After two minor-league seasons — Wausau of the Northern League in 1956 and a .367 year at Visalia in 1957 — Pinson debuted April 15, 1958, and by 1959, his first full season, was hitting .316 and leading the National League with 131 runs and 47 doubles, the first of four All-Star selections. He topped the league with 208 hits and batted .343 in 1961, winning his only Gold Glove and finishing third in MVP voting as Cincinnati won the pennant, though he managed just two hits in the Reds' five-game World Series loss to the Yankees. A slashing left-handed center fielder who combined speed and power over 18 big-league seasons, he retired with 2,757 hits, 256 home runs and a .286 average, and was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 1977. His 1960 Topps card #176 catches him fresh off that first All-Star season, a rising building block for a Reds club two years from a pennant.
