1960 Topps #177 Johnny Kucks

About Johnny Kucks
Johnny Kucks broke in with the New York Yankees in 1955, jumping straight from Class B ball to the majors after two years in the Army. Praised by manager Casey Stengel for his natural sinker and sharp fielding, he won 18 games in 1956, earned an All-Star nod, and helped New York to the pennant. Stengel then handed him the ball for Game Seven of the 1956 World Series against Brooklyn, and Kucks delivered a three-hit, 9-0 shutout at Ebbets Field — the last World Series game ever played there — striking out Jackie Robinson to end it and clinching New York's seventh championship in ten years. He added a second ring in 1958. Traded to the Kansas City Athletics in May 1959 in a deal that sent Ralph Terry and Héctor López to New York, Kucks pitched his final two big-league seasons with the Athletics, the club pictured on his 1960 Topps card. He finished 54-56 with a 4.10 ERA before a long career as a stockbroker.
