About Bob Grim
Robert Anton Grim broke in with the New York Yankees on April 18, 1954, and authored one of the great rookie seasons in franchise history, going 20-6 with a 3.26 ERA — the first Yankee rookie pitcher to win 20 games since 1910 — and winning the American League Rookie of the Year award. Elbow trouble the following year pushed him from the rotation into the bullpen, and by 1957 he was a full-time reliever, retroactively credited with leading the American League in saves and closing out that summer's All-Star Game by getting pinch-hitter Gil Hodges to fly out with the lead intact. He pitched in five World Series games for the Yankees across 1955 and 1957, sharing in New York's 1956 championship, but is also remembered for the tough-luck loss in Game 4 of the 1957 Series, when Milwaukee's Eddie Mathews turned on a 2-2 pitch for a two-run, tenth-inning walk-off home run. Traded to the Kansas City Athletics in June 1958, Grim is shown here on his 1960 Topps card, #78, during his second full season in Kansas City — a 6-10 campaign in an arm-battered eight-year career that wrapped up back with the A's in 1962.
