About Ken Johnson

Kenneth Travis Johnson signed with the Athletics organization at 18 and spent nearly a decade in the minors before debuting with Kansas City on September 13, 1958. Oddly, he batted and wrote left-handed but pitched right-handed — as a boy, his father put the glove on his left hand out of habit and taught him to throw from the right side. Johnson's 1960 Topps card, #135, part of the Sport Magazine Rookie Star subset, catches him in his first full big-league season, when he worked 42 games — mostly in relief — for a last-place Kansas City club. Traded to Cincinnati after adding a knuckleball, he helped the Reds win the NL pennant and pitched a scoreless inning against the Yankees in the World Series. With Houston in 1964, he became the only pitcher in major-league history to lose a complete-game nine-inning no-hitter, falling 1–0 to the Reds. His best seasons came with the Braves (1965–67), and he retired in 1970 with a 91–106 record, 3.46 ERA and 1,042 strikeouts.
