About Pete Daley

Peter Harvey Daley signed with the Red Sox out of Grass Valley, California, in 1948, then worked through five minor-league seasons — interrupted by two years of Army service in Japan — before sticking with Boston in 1955. Backing up Sammy White for five years, the sure-handed catcher posted a sparkling .996 fielding percentage in 233 games behind the plate, with his best season coming in 1956: a .267 average, five homers, and 29 RBIs. Boston traded him to Kansas City for pitcher Tom Sturdivant that winter, and his 1960 Topps card catches him in an Athletics uniform, splitting the catching job with Harry Chiti and setting career highs in at-bats, hits, and total bases for a last-place club. The expansion Washington Senators drafted him that December; he caught the 1961 season opener in the franchise's debut before a release the following spring closed out his seven-year big-league career.
