About Wayne Terwilliger
Wayne "Twig" Terwilliger arrived in Kansas City for 1959 after the Athletics grabbed him from Detroit in the December 1958 Rule 5 draft, and turned in the best average of his nine-year career, .267, splitting time between second base and shortstop. His lanky frame and tongue-twisting surname earned him the nickname "Twig." A Marine radioman on amphibious tanks at Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima in World War II, he broke into the majors with the 1949 Chicago Cubs, then played for Brooklyn, Washington, and the New York Giants before Kansas City claimed him. Along the way he hit a first-inning homer off Whitey Ford, beat Satchel Paige with a game-winning single, and connected for the only grand slam of his career, off Saul Rogovin. Early in the 1960 season pictured on this card, Terwilliger wrenched his back fielding a bad-hop grounder; that at-bat, a popup, proved to be his last in the majors. He went on to a long coaching career, winning two World Series rings with the Minnesota Twins in 1987 and 1991, and at 80 became the second-oldest manager in professional baseball history.
