About Roy Sievers
Roy Sievers grew up three blocks from Sportsman's Park in St. Louis and signed with the hometown Browns out of Beaumont High School. After two years in the Army, he broke into pro ball with Class C Hannibal in 1947 and by 1949 was the American League's first-ever Rookie of the Year, batting .306 for the seventh-place Browns. A shoulder injury suffered diving for a fly ball in the minors nearly ended his career and pushed him from the outfield to first base, but Sievers rebuilt himself into one of the decade's most feared sluggers. Dealt to Washington before the 1954 season, he anchored the Senators for six years, peaking in 1957 with a league-leading 42 home runs, 114 RBIs and a .301 average that placed him third in AL MVP voting behind Mickey Mantle and Ted Williams. Nicknamed "Squirrel" in high school for haunting the basket on the basketball court, he later earned "Mr. Clutch" for hitting nearly a quarter of his homers from the eighth inning on, nine as walk-offs. A five-time All-Star who finished with 318 homers, Sievers was traded to the White Sox on April 4, 1960 — which is why his 1960 Topps card #25 still shows him in a Senators cap.
