About Faye Throneberry
Maynard "Faye" Throneberry broke in with the Boston Red Sox in 1952, socking a grand-slam homer in just his third big-league game and drawing praise from Yankees manager Casey Stengel as "a natural-born player." A left-handed-hitting outfielder from Fisherville, Tennessee, he lost the better part of two seasons to Army service, then returned in 1955 to open the year batting .362 before a shoulder separation cost him his shot at succeeding Ted Williams in left field. Traded to Washington in 1957, Throneberry became the Senators' right fielder, turning in his best season in 1959 with a .251 average, a career-high 10 home runs, and 82 hits, despite eyesight trouble at the plate. His 1960 Topps card, #9, captures him in his last full season with Washington. He closed an eight-year major-league career with the 1961 expansion Los Angeles Angels, then became a champion bird-dog trainer, guiding the pointer Miller's Miss Knight to the 1973 National Bird Dog Field Trial Championship. He was the older brother of Mets folk hero Marv "Marvelous Marv" Throneberry.
