About Dan Dobbek
Daniel John Dobbek was born December 6, 1934, in Ontonagon, Michigan. He attended Western Michigan University and signed with the Washington Senators organization in 1955. His first professional season proved his best: he hit .340 with 23 home runs for the 1956 Hobbs Sports of the Class B Southwestern League, then missed the 1957 and 1958 seasons to military service. After clubbing 23 more homers for Double-A Chattanooga in 1959, he was recalled to Washington and debuted on September 9. His 1960 Topps card, #123 in the Sport Magazine Rookie Star subset, arrived on the eve of his only full big-league season: 110 games for the Senators' final Washington-based club, batting .218 with 10 home runs and 30 RBI, mostly patrolling center field. That winter he played for Cienfuegos, champions of the 1960 Caribbean Series. Traded to the Cincinnati Reds for catcher Jerry Zimmerman in January 1962, he closed out his career in the minors after the 1963 season. Dobbek died November 28, 2023, in Portland, Oregon, at 88.
