About Bill Fischer
William Charles Fischer was born October 11, 1930, in Wausau, Wisconsin, and signed with the White Sox for $150 a month out of Marathon High School in 1948. After Marine Corps service in the Korean War, he reached Chicago for good in 1957 and pitched through 1964 for the White Sox, Tigers, Senators, Kansas City Athletics, and Twins, finishing 45-58 with a 4.34 ERA. Washington claimed him off waivers in September 1958 and kept him through mid-1960 — the stretch pictured on this 1960 Topps card, #76 — with a 9-11 season in 1959 after Senators pitching coach Boom-Boom Beck and manager Cookie Lavagetto helped him sharpen his sinker and slider. With Kansas City in 1962 he set the still-standing major-league record of 84⅓ consecutive innings without a walk, breaking Christy Mathewson's mark. The next year he served up one of Mickey Mantle's longest home runs, a shot off Yankee Stadium's right-field façade. Fischer went on to a 40-plus-year coaching career, highlighted by seven seasons as Red Sox pitching coach, before his death in 2018.
