About Vic Power
Victor Felipe Pellot Pové signed with the Yankees in 1951 but was blocked from the majors by an organization uneasy with his flamboyant style and interracial dating, despite leading the Triple-A American Association in batting at .349 in 1953. New York finally traded him in December 1953, and he broke in with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1954 as the first Puerto Rican to wear that franchise's uniform. A dazzling one-handed fielder at first base, Power came to Cleveland in a 1958 trade and anchored the Indians through 1961, part of a run of seven consecutive Gold Gloves (1958-64) and four All-Star selections. On August 14, 1958, he stole home twice in the same game against Detroit, a feat no major leaguer has matched since. He later won the Twins' team MVP in 1962 and closed a twelve-year career with a .284 average, 1,716 hits and 126 home runs across five franchises. His mother's maiden name, Pové, had been misspelled "Power" by a schoolteacher; he played under that name in the majors while suiting up as Victor Pellot in winter ball back home. This 1960 Topps issue, card #75, catches him mid-career with Cleveland, a two-time Gold Glove winner and four-time All-Star.
