1960 Topps #74 Walt Moryn

About Walt Moryn
Walt Moryn broke into pro ball in 1948 with Class D Sheboygan of the Dodgers' chain, batting .338 in his debut season after a Navy hitch that included more than two years aboard a Pacific ammunition ship. The blond, 6-foot-2 slugger — nicknamed "Moose" for his size and his Minnesota roots, a name that followed him from Brooklyn to Chicago — reached the majors with the Dodgers in 1954, then found his footing after a December 1955 trade sent him to the Cubs for Randy Jackson. Moryn anchored Chicago's outfield from 1956 through 1960, averaging 20 home runs a year and earning his only All-Star selection in 1958, a career-best 26-homer season. His signature moment came May 15, 1960: a diving shoestring catch in left field that preserved Don Cardwell's no-hitter at Wrigley Field, a month before Chicago traded him to St. Louis. He closed his career with Pittsburgh in 1961, finishing with a .266 average, 101 home runs and 354 RBIs. This 1960 Topps card, #74, captures him in what proved his final season as a Cub.
