The 1960 Cubs finished 60-94, seventh in the eight-team National League and 35 games behind the pennant-winning, World Series champion Pittsburgh Pirates. Attendance at Wrigley Field slipped to 809,770, also seventh in the league. Charlie Grimm opened his third tour as manager but went just 6-11 before swapping jobs on May 4 with broadcaster Lou Boudreau, who steered the club to a 54-83 mark the rest of the way. Ernie Banks was the one constant, leading the National League with 41 home runs and 117 RBI while starting both All-Star Games. Outfielder Frank Thomas, acquired that winter from Cincinnati, supplied 20-plus homers, and veteran Richie Ashburn topped Cubs regulars with a .291 average. Glen Hobbie's 16 wins led a rotation that couldn't lift the club from the second division.
