About Charley Grimm
Charles John Grimm — "Jolly Cholly" for his singing, banjo playing, and endlessly cheerful clubhouse manner — broke in with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1916 before finding his game with the Pittsburgh Pirates (1919–1924) and Chicago Cubs (1925–1936). A slick-fielding first baseman who led the NL in fielding percentage seven times and finished with 2,299 hits and a .290 average, he starred on the 1929 pennant-winning Cubs, then took over as player-manager in August 1932 and drove Chicago to the NL flag that same year. He piloted the Cubs to two more pennants, in 1935 and 1945, finishing his Chicago managerial tenure with 946 wins, second only to Cap Anson. After managing the Boston/Milwaukee Braves (1952–1956), Grimm returned for one more turn at the Cubs' helm to open the 1960 season — the stint pictured on this card, part of Topps' 1960 manager subset — before a slow start led Wrigley to swap him with broadcaster Lou Boudreau that May. He retired with 1,287 managerial wins, still outside the Hall of Fame despite twelve years on the ballot.
