1960 Topps #95 Frank Thomas

About Frank Thomas
Frank Thomas signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1948 and spent parts of four minor-league seasons at Tallahassee, Waco, and New Orleans before debuting in the majors on August 17, 1951. A right-handed slugger, he became a full-time Pirate in 1953 and made three All-Star teams (1954, 1955, 1958), starting the 1958 Midsummer Classic at third base off a career year of 35 home runs and 109 RBIs. Traded to Cincinnati for 1959, then to the Cubs that December for pitcher Bill Henry and outfielders Lou Jackson and Lee Walls, Thomas is pictured here in his first Chicago season, coming back from hand surgery to hit .238 with 21 homers and 64 RBIs in 1960. Teammates had dubbed him "The Big Donkey," a nod less to his power than to his gruff, prickly manner. He later led the 1962 expansion Mets with 34 homers and 94 RBIs, a club record until 1975, before finishing his sixteen-year career in 1966 — fittingly, back with the Cubs. Not a Hall of Famer, but the answer to a great trivia question: baseball's "original" Frank Thomas.
